The Colorado Rockies have agreed to trade third baseman Ryan McMahon to the New York Yankees. In return, Colorado will receive two pitching prospects in Griffin Herring and Josh Grosz.
The Rockies say goodbye to a homegrown fan-favorite, as McMahon was drafted by Colorado in 2013 and made his major league debut in 2017. He spent his entire career up to this point in purple and supplied tremendous defense at third base for nine years.
New York had their eye on McMahon ever since there were rumors of him on the trade block last summer. The Yankees will gain a massive defensive upgrade with this move, especially at a position they needed to be filled after moving Jazz Chisholm Jr. to second base earlier this month.
Herring and Grosz, although aren’t expected to make the majors until 2027, both come in and are ranked high in the Rockies Top 100 prospects list. Herring has a 1.71 ERA over his 89.1 innings for the Yankees’ Single-A affiliate this year, and is assigned to start games for the Rockies’ Spokane Indians. Herring debuts as the Colorado’s fifth overall prospect and the highest ranked left hand pitcher.
Grosz was selected by the Yankees in the 11th round of the 2023 draft and specializes in the strikeout ball. He comes in as the 18th highest prospect in the ranks and the eighth-best pitcher.
This deal establishes the Rockies as “sellers” for the 2025 trade deadline, with rumors of tenured-veterans like Germán Márquez and Jake Bird as possible trade pieces. Stay tuned for every move on Mountain Time Sports Report.
