Following a 7-33 start to the 2025 season, the Colorado Rockies have relieved Manager Bud Black and Bench Coach Mike Redmond of their duties. Their record through 40 games ties the second-worst all-time in Major League Baseball history.
Black joined the promising young Rockies in 2017 and led back-to-back postseason-contending seasons. His biggest accomplishment during his time in Colorado was defeating the Chicago Cubs in the 2018 National League Wildcard game.
Black has the most wins as a manager in team history with 543, but also the most losses with 690, equating to a .440 all-time win percentage. No Rockies' manager has an all-time record above .500.
Redmond retired his 17-year playing career in 2010. After coaching around the minor leagues, the Rockies hired him as bench coach in 2016.
Perhaps the nail-in-the-coffin for Black and Redmond was Saturday night, a 21-0 loss to the San Diego Padres. The Rockies became the sixth team in Modern Era to lose by 21 or more runs in a shutout.
“Our play so far this season, especially coming off the last two seasons, has been unacceptable,” Colorado owner Dick Monfort said in a statement Sunday. “We will use the remainder of 2025 to improve where we can on the field and to evaluate all areas of our operation so we can properly turn the page into the next chapter of Rockies baseball.”
The club has appointed Third Base Coach Warren Schaeffer as interim manager for the rest of the season and Hitting Coach Clint Hurdle as interim bench coach. Schaeffer spent 10 years coaching throughout the Rockies’ minor league affiliates and becomes the eighth manager in franchise history.
“I believe that Warren is the right person to lead us forward,” General Manager Bill Schmidt said. “He has a great ability to connect with both veterans and young players and is an excellent communicator.”
Schaeffer begins his new job on a road trip against the Texas Rangers and Arizona Diamondbacks, who met in the 2023 World Series. First pitch in Globe Life Field is Monday, May 12 at 6:05 p.m.
