Colorado Rockies trim roster ahead of opening day
With only 41 players left in camp, key prospects and veterans are battling for a spot on the Rockies final 26-man roster.
There are two weeks left until Opening Day of the Major League Baseball season, and the Colorado Rockies are getting closer and closer to their final 26-man roster. After this week’s cuts, there are 41 men left with the team in Arizona, 10 of which are non-roster invitees.
Catcher Drew Romo and infielder Adael Amador were optioned to Triple-A in Albuquerque and Infielder Kyle Karros was reassigned to Minor League Camp.
Romo is the club's No. 11 ranked prospect, however, he only recorded two hits in 17 at-bats this spring while the other options at catcher have had a relatively successful month.
Veteran offseason pickup Austin Nola is showing he might still have some left in the tank, currently hitting a .349 batting average through 24 appearances. Another non-roster invitee, Braxton Fulford, has only gotten nine opportunities at the plate but has shown he is more than comfortable fielding behind the plate.
Meanwhile, two of the starting catchers from last season are making their cases as well. Jacob Stallings has three RBI’s and appears to be in midseason form behind the plate. Hunter Goodman, on the other hand, isn’t far away from locking up the starting spot. He’s slashing a .409 average, .500 on-base and .591 slug.
Second Baseman Amador is the club’s No. 5 prospect and has done well so far this year with a .419 OBP and nine RBI’s. Yet, with the addition of Thairo Estrada, it seems the club is playing it safe with the 21-year-old’s development.
Third-baseman Karros garnered eight hits through his 29 at-bats. The 22-year-old spent most of last year at the High-A level with the Spokane Indians but has likely earned himself a promotion with his spring performance.
The last notable move was sending Right Fielder Yanquiel Fernandez down to the minors, which could possibly open a spot for Zac Veen to make the Opening Day roster. There are still some question marks when it comes to the three players that will fill the outfield come April, but if the organization wants to truly fuse youth into the team this year, Ven could be the answer.
With the 2025 season beginning in less than 16 days, lots of moves are to come. Stay tuned to Mountain Time Sports Report for everything Colorado Rockies.
