Olympic Gold Medalist Mikaela Shiffrin joins Denver’s NWSL ownership group
The Colorado Olympian is considered one of the greatest female athletes of all time
Colorado native Mikaela Shiffrin is joining the ownership group of Denver’s National Women’s Soccer League expansion team.
Shiffrin was born and raised in Vail. She made her World Cup debut two days before her 16th birthday, a few weeks later she won the slalom title at the U.S. National Championship which made her the youngest American ski racer to win a national alpine crown.
“I’m beyond thrilled to join the ownership group of Denver NWSL and support something so meaningful in the community I call home,” said Shiffrin. “To be part of it, and to help bring professional women’s soccer to Colorado, is not only an incredible investment opportunity – but it is both an honor and a joy.”
Shiffrin is the most decorated Alpine skier of all-time. She has 101 World Cup Victories which is the most of any skier in history, Two Olympic gold medals, eight world championships and is a five-time World Cup winner. Shiffrin is the only athlete to win all six Alpine disciplines.
In January it was announced that the 16th NWSL team would be located in Denver after Rob Cohen’s record breaking $110 million bid was accepted. Since then the team has already surpassed 10,000 season ticket deposits. The team plans to build only the second stadium specifically made for an NWSL team between I-25 and Santa Fe Drive in south Denver.
"Mikaela's commitment to excellence, her global impact and her deep Colorado roots make her a perfect addition to our ownership group," Cohen said in a statement.
Denver’s NWSL team, which is yet to be named, plans to make its debut in the 2026 season.
