BREAKING: Nuggets clean house before playoffs, fire Malone and Booth
David Adelman will take over as interim Head Coach with the Playoffs rapidly approaching
With just three games left in the regular season, the Denver Nuggets have decided to fire General Manager Calvin Booth and Head Coach Micheal Malone.
According to ESPN, Malone and Booth were dismissed in a meeting today, in light of the team's recent four game losing streak. The Nuggets have three more games to decide their seeding in the playoffs.
The team is in the running for the play-in tournament if they lose out, or the No. 3 or No. 5 seed in the Western Conference. The move is tied for the latest in-season coaching change in NBA history, matching the 1980-81 Atlanta Hawks firing of Hubie Brown. The Hawks were not a playoff team.
Malone had been with the team since 2015. His career is highlighted by coaching the team to their first NBA championship in 2023. He was the winningest coach in franchise history, with eight winning seasons and six consecutive playoff appearances dating back to the 2018-19 season.
Booth was brought on as an assistant GM in 2017, but was promoted in 2020 to General Manager. He’s partially to thank for crafting the starting lineup for the Nuggets from their championship winning team. Controversial moves over the last several offseasons like letting Kentavious Caldwell-Pope walk in free agency and trading for Russel Westbrook had put him on the hot seat.
The organization has already announced that David Adelman will take over as interim Head Coach for the upcoming playoffs beginning on April 19.
